Republicans Looking to Gut Affordable Care Act and Medicaid

January 13, 2025

To pay for Trump’s newest round of tax breaks for the ultra-wealthy, House Republicans look to rip away health care from working Americans.

LANSING — Late last week, POLITICO exposed Republicans’ plans to use Medicaid and Affordable Care Act changes to bankroll Trump’s tax cuts for the 1% and other priorities. Before Trump is even inaugurated, House Republicans are already trying to use programs that millions of Michiganders rely on to line the pockets of the wealthy. This comes at the same time as the Detroit News’ reporting that Michigan Republicans in Congress want to threaten public education by tearing down the Department of Education.

“Republicans are plainly putting the wealth of the 1% ahead of the needs of hard-working Michiganders and Americans alike,” said Chair of the Michigan Democratic Party Lavora Barnes. “Unfortunately, we’ve come to expect no less from Trump’s lackeys in Congress, constantly throwing the middle class under the bus to help the rich —- but Michiganders deserve better.

“On top of gutting these crucial programs, Michigan Republicans in Congress are gearing up to attack public education across the country, showing just how out of touch they are with Michiganders. The MIGOP has followed Trump at every extremist turn, regardless of how much it will hurt Michigan families.”
