Statement: Michigan Dems Remember 2020 Insurrection as House Dems Certify 2024 Election

January 6, 2025

Four years after a mob stormed the Capitol, House Democrats came together to certify the election results and ensure the peaceful transfer of power

LANSING - On January 6, 2025, Congress fulfilled its role in a sacred part of the democratic process: ensuring the peaceful transfer of power by certifying the 2024 election results. In casting their votes, Michigan House Democrats proved their continued dedication to protecting our democracy and upholding the ideals of our country.

“Michigan Democrats know that our democracy must be fought for at every turn, and I am proud to have watched them take part in the democratic process today when they cast their votes to certify the 2024 election results,” said Chair of the Michigan Democratic Party Lavora Barnes. “In 2020, this day was filled with violence and bloodshed when violent insurrectionists, incited by Donald Trump, attempted to overturn the will of the people by attacking the Capitol and the brave officers serving there.

“Once again, Democrats showed that ours is the party of peace and democracy as the House ensures the voice of Michiganders and Americans alike is heard. The peaceful transition of power today will reinforce the ideals that founded our country and remind us that we must protect them every day.”
