Statement from Mississippi Democratic Party Chair on Trump’s Disastrous Joint Address

March 6, 2025

In response to Donald Trump’s Joint Address to Congress last night, Mississippi Democratic Party Chair Cheikh Taylor released the following statement:

“Last night (Mar 5th), we saw Trump ramble on about faraway places like Greenland and Mars, but we didn’t hear a real plan for solving the problems facing Mississippians like bringing down costs or improving economic security. All the Republicans who blindly applauded Trump should go home and meet their constituents face-to-face. But they won’t, because they know that the Republican tax scam to take money out of the pockets of working people to give trillions in handouts to the rich will cost them their jobs.

“Donald Trump has been an abject disaster for Mississippians over his first six weeks in office. He’s killed contracts for Mississippi farmers and raised their fertilizer costs, he’s shuttered nursing homes and gone after Mississippians’ Social Security, and he’s attacked Mississippi’s public schools while trying to take away health care for our families. Mississippians remember who Donald Trump is and that’s why his approval rating has already plummeted after only six weeks in office.”

Here’s what Mississippians didn’t hear from Donald Trump last night:

  • His plans could rip health care away from 22 million Americans and gut protections for 100 million people with preexisting conditions

  • Any plan to bring down costs for working families and tackle inflation — which he promised to do on “Day One”

  • An answer on how he will make things right for small businesses struggling and buckling after his reckless funding freezes.

  • A response to the 71% of Americans who believe the ultra-wealthy have too much influence on the White House

  • Why he’s gutting VA healthcare and slashing service members’ access to their hard-earned benefits (while his top advisor calls veterans “not fit” to serve in the federal government)
