Mississippi Democratic Party Statement on Trump’s Joint Address to Congress

March 5, 2025

As Donald Trump prepares to deliver his joint address to Congress this evening, Mississippi Democratic Party Chairman Cheikh Taylor released the following statement:

“A little over a month into his second term, Donald Trump has been disastrous for Mississippi families. Instead of fulfilling his promise to lower costs, Trump’s policies are set to increase prices on essentials – from housing to food to gas – while cutting critical federal programs, forcing mass public servant layoffs, and rolling back economic protections secured by Democrats. “

Trump is addressing Congress tonight on the heels of his administration canceling leases for three Social Security Administration offices in our state. Mississippi’s seniors deserve better,” said Mississippi Democratic Party Executive Director Mikel Bolden. Now, Trump and House Republicans are pushing a budget that could strip health care from thousands of Mississippians who rely on Medicaid – all to give massive tax breaks to billionaires like Elon Musk.

“Trump has made his priorities clear, and Americans should believe him – he is a servant to Elon Musk and the ultra-wealthy,” said Mississippi Democratic Party Vice-Chair Jodie Brown. At this point in his term, Trump is the least popular president in modern American history, and it’s no surprise why: he continues to leave working Mississippians behind while serving the interests of corrupt billionaires.

Meanwhile, Democrats are fighting tooth and nail to protect working families and push back against Trump’s billionaire-first agenda. For more information, contact Mikel Bolden, Executive Director of the Mississippi Democratic Party, at info@mississippidemocrats.org.
