DPVA Chairwoman Susan Swecker's Statement on the Anniversary of January 6, 2021

On January 6, 2025 marks four years since insurrectionists violently assaulted our democracy on January 6, 2021 in an attempt to block the peaceful transfer of power. Today also marks the 2024 presidential election certification. This certification—and anniversary—serve as a reminder of both the fragility and resilience of our democratic institutions, and more importantly, the ongoing need to protect and strengthen them.

We are grateful to all of our Democratic lawmakers who continue to work tirelessly to uphold the rule of law, ensure accountability, and safeguard our democratic principles. As we look ahead, we must remain vigilant in defending our democracy and upholding the rights of every Virginian and American. We also pause to honor the law enforcement officers who were injured on January 6, 2021, and those who lost their lives as a result of the attack.
