Congressman Bennie G. Thompson Defends the Integrity of the January 6 Committee Against Baseless Attacks

December 11, 2024

JACKSON, MS – In response to recent inflammatory comments made by former President Donald Trump, suggesting that members of the January 6 Committee should “go to jail,” Congressman Bennie G. Thompson (D-MS), who served as Chair of the bipartisan committee, issued a strong statement defending the integrity and mission of the panel.

“The January 6 Committee was established by the United States House of Representatives to uncover the truth behind one of the darkest days in our nation’s history,” said Congressman Thompson. “The attack on the Capitol was an assault on our democracy and the peaceful transfer of power. Our work was guided by a commitment to the Constitution and our oath as public servants to uphold it.”

Under Congressman Thompson’s leadership, the committee meticulously investigated the events surrounding the January 6, 2021, insurrection, conducted dozens of interviews, reviewed extensive evidence, and produced a detailed report on the causes and consequences of the attack. The findings shed light on the coordinated efforts to undermine the 2020 presidential election and provided a roadmap to safeguard democracy in the future.

“Donald Trump’s baseless and dangerous rhetoric is an attempt to rewrite history and deflect accountability. His comments about imprisoning members of the committee are not only false but also a direct attack on the rule of law and the democratic process,” Thompson added. “Threats and intimidation will not deter those who seek the truth and work to protect our nation’s values.” Congressman Thompson emphasized that the committee’s work was a bipartisan effort supported by Democrats and Republicans who recognized the importance of preserving the integrity of American democracy.

The committee’s findings have already contributed to reforms to prevent similar attacks, including updates to the Electoral Count Act to ensure the certification process remains secure. “History will not look kindly on those who incite division and promote lies. The January 6 Committee stood for accountability and the preservation of democratic principles. We cannot allow distractions or threats to diminish the work we’ve done to protect our democracy,” Thompson concluded.

Congressman Thompson reaffirmed his unwavering commitment to the truth and to holding those responsible accountable for the events of January 6. He called on all Americans, regardless of political affiliation, to reject divisive rhetoric and focus on building a stronger, more united nation.
