Wisconsin GOP Leader Hints at New Abortion Ban

January 13, 2025

MADISON, Wis. — In remarks on WISN’s UPFRONT aired over the weekend, Wisconsin Senate Majority Leader Devin LeMahieu revealed that the GOP was again looking to introduce a new statewide abortion ban in Wisconsin.

Speculating that current court rulings providing access to abortion for up to 20 weeks of pregnancy could be upheld, LeMahieu confirmed Republicans “could try to do it to 14 weeks.” Under the precedent established by Roe v. Wade, abortion was generally accessible up to 28 weeks.

LeMahieu’s hints about a new statewide abortion ban come as Republicans are pushing to install extreme politician Brad Schimel on the Wisconsin Supreme Court. Schimel continues to support enforcement of Wisconsin’s 1849 abortion ban. With Schimel on the bench, Republican politicians in Madison would be free to pursue even more restrictive bans on abortion access in Wisconsin, putting lives in jeopardy and further eroding our right to privacy and other core freedoms.

“Devin LeMahieu and his fellow Republicans are eager to force through a statewide abortion ban, and they’re counting on extreme politician Brad Schimel to give it his rubber stamp on the Supreme Court,” said Democratic Party of Wisconsin Communications Director Joe Oslund. “Rather than focus on lowering costs for working families by funding child care and extending post-partum care as a part of Medicaid coverage, extreme politicians like Devin LeMahieu and Robin Vos are attacking our right to privacy and other core freedoms. Enough is enough.”
