Veterans Day: A Day to Pause and Honor the Service of Our Veterans

November 11, 2024

DPVA Chairwoman Susan Swecker shared the following statement in recognition of Veterans Day

From the very birth of our nation, Americans have answered the call to serve and protect our country. Millions of brave men and women have stepped forward throughout our history, defending the values and freedoms that make our country great. Veterans Day is a day to pause and honor their service, as well as their families who have stood by them.

Virginia is home to over 600,000 veterans and 125,000 active military members. When our military members retire, it is our duty to honor their sacrifice by providing the support, respect, and opportunities they’ve earned. We must remain committed to prioritizing their needs—providing access to healthcare, benefits, and meaningful career opportunities—so they can thrive after their service.

DPVA Chair of the Veterans and Military Families Caucus Charley Conrad shared the following statement

Veterans Day is a time to honor the service of our veterans, as well as the military families who support them. Their sacrifices deserve our deepest gratitude.

It's inspiring to see communities and schools increasingly recognize the veterans among them, with great care and effort put into this important day.

As a 20-year Navy veteran and Chair of the Veterans and Military Families Caucus of the Democratic Party of Virginia, I want to personally thank everyone who worked so hard during the recent campaign cycle. Together, we helped secure a victory in Virginia, and we extended our efforts into North Carolina and Pennsylvania. We answered the call to duty, and I am deeply grateful for everyone’s commitment.

Now, as veterans and military families, we must stay engaged and continue to protect our democracy. Next year’s election will be critical, and we must be ready.

Thank you again to all veterans and military families. I know the sacrifices you’ve made—I’ve been there too.
