Three Years After Overturn of Roe v. Wade, Trump is Still Putting Women's Health in Danger

June 24, 2025

On June 24, 2025 marks the third anniversary of Donald Trump’s handpicked Supreme Court justices ripping away women’s recognized fundamental right to make decisions about their own body. Dobbs v. Jackson paved the way for Republicans to launch attacks on women’s reproductive health and enact abortion bans nationwide, including the nation’s first right here in Indiana.

In Trump’s second term, reproductive health care is at even greater risk as Republicans push a dangerous backdoor national  abortion ban through Congress to add on to numerous state bans that have come down in the past three years, making it even more difficult for Hoosier women to seek care.

On the third anniversary of the Dobbs ruling, Indiana Democratic Party Chair Karen Tallian released the following statement:

“Three years ago today, Trump’s handpicked Supreme Court justices made good on Republicans’ decadeslong quest to rip away women’s reproductive freedoms. In the years since, Republicans have unleashed their big brother agenda by enacting draconian, total abortion bans, restricting birth control access, and slashing health care funding. Indiana was the very first state to pass a ban after the Dobbs decision, stripping away the ability for Hoosier women to make choices about their own bodies. Surveys show that Hoosiers are overwhelmingly opposed to that law.

These bans are being passed while OB and maternity facilities are closing throughout our state, only exacerbating the problem, with over a dozen closing since 2020. Indiana already has one of the worst maternal mortality rates in the entire country. Lawmakers should be focused on helping pregnant women and children, not making it harder for families to receive care.

Now, Trump and his Republican minions are carrying out Project 2025’s blueprint by sneaking a backdoor national abortion ban into their dangerous budget bill. As if slashing Hoosiers’ health care wasn’t craven enough, big brother Republicans are hellbent on ensuring abortion care is completely out of reach for Indiana women. On top of that, by releasing Terminated Pregnancy Reports, Governor Mike Braun is allowing the medical records of victims to be parsed over by political activists.

Let’s be clear: right-wing politicians would rather let women die than recognize their right to make decisions about their bodies.”

In Indiana, Republicans are following Trump’s lead by pushing anti-abortion legislation.

Donald Trump “proudly” took credit for overturning Roe v. Wade and all the extreme abortion bans across the country.

Trump: “I was proudly the person responsible for the ending of … Roe v. Wade.”

Trump: “For 54 years they were trying to get Roe v. Wade terminated, and I did it, and I’m proud to have done it. … Nobody else was going to get that done but me, and we did it, and we did something that was a miracle.”

Meanwhile, Trump’s Republican lapdogs in Congress are pushing his disastrous budget bill that would create a backdoor national abortion ban.

NOTUS: “The reconciliation bill has given Republicans a way to target abortion access in states that legally protect it: threatening their federal health care funding.

“House Republicans added a last-minute provision to their reconciliation bill via a manager’s amendment that would block certain Affordable Care Act funds from going to state health plans that cover abortion services. …

“If the provision becomes law, it could force state officials to choose between maintaining abortion accessibility and ensuring that residents maintain their health care coverage. …

“The Hyde Amendment already bans federal funds from being used directly on abortion. The Affordable Care Act prohibits recipients from using cost-sharing reductions — financial assistance to lower the out-of-pocket costs for low-income individuals — to pay for abortions.

“However, the reconciliation bill takes that limitation further, saying that health plans that cover abortion services cannot receive federally funded cost-sharing reductions at all. That could threaten financial assistance for all residents of a state. In 2024, half of all people enrolled in an ACA health plan qualified for cost-sharing reductions, per the Centers for Medicare and Medicaid Services.”
