This Halloween, Don’t Get Tricked by the GOP

October 31, 2024

Chicago, IL -- In a stunning display of hypocrisy, and despite Donald Trump and the Illinois GOP historically sowing doubt in early and mail-in voting, the National Republican Congressional Committee (NRCC) has sent out a mail piece in Rock Island County with the headline: “JOE BIDEN & J.B. PRITZKER DON’T WANT YOU TO VOTE!” Don’t be fooled by the GOPs sudden embrace of voting access—this is the party of the Big Lie and the Party who’s already preparing themselves for a second Big Lie next week. As attacks on voting rights and unsubstantiated claims of fraud continue to mar our elections, the Democratic Party of Illinois firmly supports voting access, voter protection and secure elections.

“For years, Republicans have supported false claims and have worked to undermine voting access. Despite Donald Trump discounting the validity of mail-in and early voting this very election cycle, Illinois Republicans are trying to change their tune. Well, the Democratic Party of Illinois is consistent. We’re committed to defending voting access, our values and our fundamental rights against attacks from extremists,” said Democratic Party of Illinois Chair Lisa Hernandez.

In state after state—including Illinois—Republicans have filed lawsuits to kill the mail-in ballot process. In Illinois, they filed their lawsuit in the 7th Circuit Court of Appeals. They lost.

“The same political party that went to court in Illinois to stop the mail-in ballot process is now doing a 180 and saying it’s actually Democrats who don’t want us to vote. This is political hypocrisy,” said State Senator and Rock Island County Democratic Party Chair Mike Halpin.

He continued: “This is obviously a gimmick to help their candidate against our hometown neighbor, Congressman Eric Sorensen. The voters can see hypocrisy by Republican DC insiders from miles away.”
