The Florida Democratic Party issued the following statement in response to Florida Speaker of the House Daniel Perez decision to convene a Select Committee that will reconsider Florida’s Congressional districts. This decision is being made despite no constitutional requirement or legitimate justification to do so:
“This is corruption, plain and simple. The Speaker is abusing his power and breaking with decades of precedent to rig the system in favor of Republicans. Congressional maps are drawn once a decade, after a Federal census, not when a political party is afraid of losing power.
By convening this Select Committee, Florida Republicans are attempting a blatant power grab that will silence the voices of Florida’s voters, especially Black and brown voters ahead of the mid-term elections.
Floridians are watching their home insurance rates skyrocket, their rents go up, and their public schools crumble, but instead of fixing any of it, Florida Republicans are too busy bowing down to Donald Trump and following his plan to undermine American democracy.
This is not normal. Drawing congressional maps mid-decade will cost Floridians millions of taxpayer dollars. We cannot allow this to happen.”
The Florida Democratic Party is calling on lawmakers, legal experts, and voters across the state to reject this unethical move to draw congressional maps in the mid-decade.
