Texas Democratic Party Mourns the Passing of Texas Icon Cecile Richards

January 20, 2025

AUSTIN, Texas — The Texas Democratic Party joins the nation in mourning the loss of Cecile Richards, a tireless advocate for reproductive freedom, social justice, and Democratic values. Richards, the daughter of former Texas Governor Ann Richards, passed away on Monday at the age of 67, following a courageous battle with brain cancer.

“Cecile Richards was a trailblazer, a force for good, and a voice for the voiceless,” said Texas Democratic Party Chair Gilberto Hinojosa. “Her fearless leadership, whether as the president of Planned Parenthood or as an activist on the frontlines of the fight for abortion access, inspired millions and left an indelible mark on our nation’s history. Cecile was a true Texas giant whose work will continue to guide us as we push forward in the fight for justice, equality and restoring reproductive freedom.”

After her diagnosis in 2023, Richards remained steadfast in her commitment to advancing Democratic values. Last August, she delivered a powerful speech at the Democratic National Convention, highlighting the urgent need to protect reproductive rights and cast Texas’ ceremonial votes to nominate Vice President Kamala Harris for President of the United States.

“Cecile embodied the spirit of Texas Democrats: bold, unapologetic, and unwavering in her belief that we can create a better future for all. Her legacy will live on in the countless lives she touched and the movements she built,” Hinojosa added.

The Texas Democratic Party extends its deepest condolences to Richards’ family and loved ones. Cecile’s memory will remain a beacon of hope and strength for those who continue the work she so passionately championed.
