SDDP Excited for Harris-Walz Campaign

August 6, 2024

South Dakota Democratic Party Chair Shane Merrill released the following statement after Kamala Harris announced Minnesota Governor Tim Walz as her Vice Presidential pick:

“Governor Walz will be a great running mate with Vice President Harris. Walz has been a proven leader for our neighbors to the east. He provided free school meals for students, something South Dakota’s Governor refuses to do. He’s shown that he can work across party lines, including when he flipped his district for US Congress. And, with a slim Democratic majority in the Minnesota legislature, he’s worked on bipartisan policies for the betterment of his state. He has been a staunch advocate for reproductive rights and defended voting rights. He’s a former teacher who understands the struggles our educators and schools face today. He also grew up in a small town and knows what our rural areas need to thrive. I personally have ties to Butte, Nebraska, where Walz graduated high school. I’m thrilled to see the Midwest and small town America represented on the Democratic Presidential ticket.”

“On Aug 6th’s announcement continues the excitement and energy we are seeing across South Dakota to elect Kamala Harris as our next President. We look forward to supporting the Harris-Walz ticket at the DNC Convention and on the campaign trail leading up to the November election.”
