Iowa Republicans Share Misinformation on Abortion, Tell Voters ‘I’m Probably Not Your Candidate’

Republicans True Views on Abortion Come to Light as Election Day Nears

DES MOINES – While knocking doors in Ankeny, Iowa Republican Heather Stephenson who is running for HD-42, told a voter “I’m probably not your candidate,” and walked away after a voter said her top issue for November’s election is women’s rights.

While Stephenson outright refuses to talk to voters about abortion, Republican Rep. Eddie Andrews of Johnston showed how ignorant he is on the subject in a recent Iowa Public Radio Interview.

“It’s not a six-week abortion ban, it’s more of the heartbeat, which you know could depend on the woman, right? If you’re thin, it may be six weeks. If you’re curvy, it could be eight or ten weeks,” Andrews told Iowa Public Radio.

Republican Samantha Fett, who’s running for HD-22 in Warren County, made it clear she’s “unapologetically pro-life” this week and said women’s true calling is to be mothers.

“I think we’re embracing our true calling as women to follow that motherly instinct and be mothers,” Fett said.

U.S. Rep. Mariannette Miller-Meeks also went out of her way this week to say she doesn’t think abortion is a top priority for Iowans.

“Republicans have made it clear that they will not budge on Iowa’s extreme and unpopular six-week abortion ban if they’re re-elected this year,” said IDP Chair Rita Hart. “While women across the country are dying from similar laws, these same Republicans want to drag women back more than a century to a time when we were told to stay in the kitchen. Their policies are dated and not what Iowans want. We are not going back.”
