TRENTON - Governor Murphy today signed Executive Order No. 373 ordering U.S. and New Jersey flags to fly at half-staff until sunset on January 28, 2025, consistent with federal law in recognition and mourning of a dedicated public servant, former President James “Jimmy” Earl Carter, Jr.
President Jimmy Carter passed away on December 29, 2024, at 100. He was preceded in death by his cherished wife of 77 years, Rosalynn Carter. They leave behind a loving legacy through their children, numerous grandchildren, and great-grandchildren.
Before entering politics, President Carter was deeply connected to his community, managing the family farm and running a peanut business after serving in the United States Navy. After his election to the Georgia State Senate in 1962, he quickly advanced to become Governor of Georgia, where he championed civil rights and modernized state government. In 1976, Jimmy Carter was elected the 39th President of the United States, dedicating his presidency to human rights, diplomacy, and environmental justice. His efforts to broker peace between Egypt and Israel in the Camp David Accords and his commitment to energy reform highlighted his time in office.
Following his presidency, President Carter founded the Carter Center, a non-governmental organization dedicated to advancing human rights and alleviating human suffering. Alongside his wife Rosalynn, he volunteered with Habitat for Humanity, contributing to the construction and repair of thousands of homes, including those in Union Beach, New Jersey, after Superstorm Sandy. In 2002, he was awarded the Nobel Peace Prize for his tireless efforts to promote peace, democracy, and development. President Carter leaves behind a legacy that has made the world a safer and more humane place.

We thank President Carter for his service to our nation and offer our heartfelt prayers for his family and all who had the privilege of knowing him.
