Governor Moore Statement on Congress Passing the Federal Budget Reconciliation Bill

ANNAPOLIS, MD - Governor Wes Moore On July 3, 2025 released the following statement regarding the U.S. Congress’ passage of the federal budget reconciliation bill:

“This so-called ‘Big Beautiful Bill’ marks a direct and heartless assault on the American people. Neither Maryland nor any other state across the country has the resources to fill the massive hole that the federal government created today in our social safety net.

“This legislation is a nightmare for Maryland families, directly hurting the people of our state by raising costs on everything from energy to health care for seniors, and for our student borrowers—all to give multi-millionaires and billionaires a tax cut. President Trump and Republicans in Congress are cutting a quarter of a billion dollars from Maryland's rural hospitals, taking health care away from nearly 200,000 Marylanders, and hurting 684,000 Marylanders that rely on food assistance to pay for their groceries-working families, seniors, children, veterans, homeless individuals and people with disabilities. Today, our federal government has delivered a gift to the ultra-wealthy and told everyone else: ‘You’re on your own.’

“This bill makes our country less affordable, less healthy, and more debt-ridden while kicking millions of people off their health care and decim?ating food assistance nationwide. As this bill heads to the President’s desk, I am prepared to use every tool at my disposal as Maryland’s chief executive to protect our people and minimize the fallout from these reckless policies.”
