Donald Trump Won’t Lower Costs for Working Michiganders - But He’ll Give Big Corporations Another Tax Handout

December 13, 2024

LANSING, MI -- Before he can even be sworn in, Donald Trump is walking back his repeated promises to lower costs for the American people on the campaign trail. With this unsurprising backpedaling, Chair of the Michigan Democratic Party Lavora Barnes released the following statement:

“After repeatedly promising Americans he’d lower the costs of groceries on the campaign trail, Donald Trump is admitting he misled voters. To add insult to injury, in a recent interview, Trump doubled down on his plans to gift tax handouts to the ultra-rich and mega-corporations.

“Before he even returns to the White House, Trump has made this much crystal clear: he is hellbent on pushing an expensive Project 2025 agenda that will rig the economy for the ultra-rich at working families’ expense. Trump will continue to break promises to Michiganders and Michigan Democrats will be there every step of the way to hold him accountable.”

In a recent interview, Donald Trump walked back his campaign promise to lower the costs of groceries.

HuffPost: “Trump Backtracks On Campaign Pledge To Bring Down Grocery Prices”

-- “President-elect Donald Trump admitted in an interview with Time magazine that it will be difficult for him to reduce consumer prices, contrary to statements he made on the campaign trail this year.

-- “‘It’s hard to bring things down once they’re up.You know, it’s very hard.’ […]

-- “Trump’s remarks to Time echoed similar backtracking he made on his promise that his proposed tariffs wouldn’t boost prices.”

Meanwhile, Trump will instead prioritize giving tax handouts to the ultra-rich and big corporations in his second term.

TIME: “Are you going to push for any major legislation in your first year in office?

-- Trump: “Yeah, sure.”

-- TIME: “What will that be?”

-- “Well, we have to extend the [TCJA] tax cuts … ”

-- Trump: “We’re going to be cutting taxes still further [for corporations]. You know, we got it down to 21%, we’re going to bring it down even below that. […] Last time, as you know, we took it probably from close to 44-45% down to 21 everyone said that was impossible. Now it was always my – I really wanted to get it down to 15, and we’ll be able to do that.”

-- Trump“We’re cutting [big corporations’] taxes. We’re going to cut them very substantially. We got them down to 21% from probably 42 or 44% depending on where you are, we got them down to 21, everyone said that was a miracle. Now we’re getting them down to 15, but only if you make your product here, otherwise you pay 21, which is not bad. […]”
