Chairman’s Update: Election Day nears, Legislators Unite For Roundtables, Hurricanes Helene and Milton Recovery Efforts and More!

November 1, 2024

Democrat,

This weekend is our final chance to DO SOMETHING. Getting involved has never been more important. In CD-7, Sue Altman’s race will need every single vote possible. We also have the opportunity to flip CD-2 back to a real Democrat in Joe Salerno. And we cannot forget our local and county races. Some local races are determined by just a handful of votes. Your vote is not just a practice of your civic duty, it makes a difference. Please remind your neighbors and family members about this. If you have an hour this weekend, consider signing up for one of the many volunteer opportunities state-wide. Whether it’s phone banking, canvassing, or supporting Pennsylvania, every effort counts. Join us in motivating and then mobilizing any one who has not voted yet. Sign up today and I’ll see you on the campaign trail this weekend.

This past Sunday the NJ Dems South Asian American Caucus and South Asians for Harris held their virtual webinar roundtable for a discussion about the important role of the South Asian American community in the political world and in this year’s election.

The panel brought together a lineup of candidates and elected officials, including Matt Jenkins (CD-4) and Sue Altman (CD-7), alongside prominent leaders like Assemblyman Herb Conaway, Congresswoman Mikie Sherrill, Mayor Neena Singh of Montgomery Township, and Senator Vin Gopal (LD-11). Together, they delved into the pressing need for greater minority representation in politics, emphasizing how vital it is to champion the voices and needs of constituents from all backgrounds.

VETERANS APPRECIATION MONTH

In honor of Veterans Appreciation Month, we will be showcasing a member from our Veterans Caucus every Friday. Join us as we celebrate their stories, contributions, and dedication to our community!

This week, we’re honored to dedicate a special section of Chairman’s Update to recognize Veteran Clarence Jackson, Jr.

Governor Phil Murphy also held a roundtable discussion earlier this week about expanding access to public contracting opportunities for historically marginalized groups. The roundtable featured legislators and stakeholders to discuss potential legislative remedies and existing administrative initiatives to create a more equitable business environment. The discussion followed the release of a comprehensive statewide disparity study that showed that there are significant gaps in public contract awards to minority- and women-owned businesses.

“One of New Jersey’s best attributes has always been its vast diversity. Our state is home to people of so many different backgrounds, who all deserve the opportunity to succeed in their chosen field; however, lingering inequities continue to create barriers to entry for our minority and women-owned businesses that want to contract with our state government. This is unacceptable and, with the help of our lawmakers and business community, we will take action,” said Governor Murphy.

President Biden continues his administration’s commitment to ongoing recovery efforts and support for survivors of Hurricane Helene and Milton. The Federal response from the Biden-Harris administration has seen hundreds of millions of dollars in financial assistance to survivors, as well as substantial debris removal and power restoration. The White House Homeland Security Advisor Liz Sherwood-Randall traveled to North Carolina on October 26th to coordinate recovery efforts with state and local elected officials such as Governor Roy Cooper.

The Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA) has helped deliver over 11 million meals and 9.6 million liters of water for communities affected by Helene. FEMA also has 65 Disaster Recovery Centers open throughout all of the affected communities to provide in-person assistance to survivors. As of October 27th, they report on having 21 of these centers in North Carolina. Additionally, the National Guard and the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers have both been mobilized to aid with recovery efforts and help with infrastructure and safe waterways assessments.

— Chairman LeRoy J. Jones, Jr.
