Wyoming Democrats Condemn Barrasso and Lummis for Voting to Sell Off Public Lands

April 8, 2025

Cheyenne, WY – On Friday, Senators John Barrasso and Cynthia Lummis voted against an amendment that would have blocked the federal government from selling public lands to help fund the budget. Wyoming Democratic Party has released the following statement.

Senators Barrasso and Lummis’ votes to leave Wyoming’s public lands on the auction block are a slap in the face to the voters they are supposed to represent.

Wyomingites spend more time on our public lands than residents of any other state. These lands aren’t just beautiful, they’re central to our way of life and our economy. They support tens of thousands of jobs and generate millions in tourism revenue.

The idea that these lands could be sold off to fund tax cuts for billionaires is as offensive as it is out of touch.

“In the West, our access to public lands defines our way of life — it’s where we hunt, fish, recreate, work, and find solitude. That’s not a partisan belief; it’s something folks on both sides of the aisle overwhelmingly agree on,” said Wyoming Democratic Party Chair Joe M Barbuto. “By voting to allow the sale of our federal lands to fund a political agenda, Senators Barrasso and Lummis are not only betraying a core Wyoming value and the people they’re supposed to represent, but future generations of Wyomingites. If they don’t understand that, they don’t understand Wyoming.”
