Wisconsin Democrats on Joint Finance GOP Budget Vote

May 8, 2025

MADISON, WI - After Republicans on the Legislature’s Joint Finance Committee voted today to strip over 600 items from Governor Evers’ budget, ignoring the will of the people by sidelining solutions to key challenges facing Wisconsinites, Democratic Party of Wisconsin Executive Director Sarah Abel released the following statement:

“Nothing in life is certain except death, taxes, and Wisconsin Republicans’ utter disregard for the will of the people. Or, as the Legislature would have it, Wisconsin Republicans voting to reject nearly $2 billion in tax relief for working families.

“At budget listening sessions across the state, the Joint Finance Committee heard from hundreds of Wisconsinites asking the Legislature to use the state budget to address the cost of living, support working families, and move our state forward. Today, Wisconsin Republicans responded to those concerns by rejecting in a single vote over 600 items from the state budget, including funding to continue Child Care Counts, ensure our communities have clean water, and bring down rising property taxes. It’s clear that Wisconsin Republicans don’t know the first thing about compromise or doing what’s right for Wisconsin—and our state is worse off for it.

“But it’s a whole new ballgame thanks to Wisconsin’s new, fair maps. When voters next go to the polls, they’ll have a real choice between the Republican politicians like Van Wanggaard, Pat Snyder, Howard Marklein, and Todd Novak who have brushed off their concerns for the last 15 years, and Democrats who have real solutions to Wisconsinites’ biggest challenges. There’s a light at the end of the tunnel, and Wisconsinites can rest easy knowing this is the last budget cycle that they’ll be forced to endure Republicans’ petty political games at the expense of our state.”
