Will Burt Jones Return Political Donations from GOP-Linked Ponzi Scheme That Defrauded Georgians?

July 21, 2025

New reporting from the Atlanta Journal-Constitution today revealed that gubernatorial candidate Burt Jones received a $1000 donation from the founders of the disgraced Newnan-based First Liberty, a GOP-linked firm that is currently under investigation for allegedly swindling Georgia investors to the tune of $140 million.

Of the many Georgia Republicans who received proceeds from the Ponzi scheme, only two have so far returned the money. More than a week after the alleged fraud was exposed, Burt Jones continues to sit on the donation and has made no commitment to return it.

“Burt Jones received political contributions that came at the expense of unsuspecting Georgians who were defrauded of their life savings by First Liberty. If Jones won’t commit to doing the right thing and returning this money to the Georgians from whom it was stolen, he has no business asking for their votes for Governor,” said DPG Chair Charlie Bailey.
