What They’re Saying: Marylanders Blast Hogan for Funneling Millions to Business Partners

October 14, 2024

Six of Hogan’s listed clients won ~40% of housing awards over eight years, beating out 60+ other companies

Marylanders are reacting to wall-to-wall coverage of how as governor, Larry Hogan directed taxpayer dollars to his firm’s clients while holding regular meetings with company leadership.

Here’s what people are saying:

  • Delegate Marc KormanIt is time to follow Governor Moore’s lead, close the barn door, join several other states, and pass legislation requiring that Governors use blind trusts. As chair of the House committee with jurisdiction over ethics laws and in consultation with the Speaker, the House will be prioritizing this bill next legislative session.

  • Speaker of the House Adrienne A. Jonesin response to Del. Korman: I look forward to working with Chair Korman next Session on this important issue. He’s right: Marylanders deserve to know that their Governor is solely serving the interests of the people.

  • Rep. Jamie RaskinLarry Hogan is the first governor in MD history to have made millions while in office. Amazingly, nearly 40% of all affordable housing awards Hogan’s team approved went to six clients of his own real estate firm, from which he never divested. What’s going on here?

  • Delegate Vaughn StewartHogan says the @TIME story is a “conspiracy” because the journalist’s 2020 reporting on Hogan self-dealing was “discredited.” That’s false. In response to that reporting, I drafted a bill to tighten Maryland’s ethics laws. The General Assembly passed it into law unanimously.

  • Former White House Ethics Lawyer Richard PainterOh sh—. Hogan Approved Millions for His Firm’s Listed Clients as Governor.

  • Former White House Aide Keith BoykinLarry Hogan is more like Trump than you thought. During Hogan’s eight years in office, nearly 40% of competitive affordable housing awards overseen by the governor went to developers who were Hogan’s own clients.

  • Commentator Roland MartinThis is huge news. “Exclusive: Larry Hogan Approved Millions for His Firm’s Listed Clients as Governor”… And @LarryHogan never divested so he made millions off of these deals while serving as governor. I’m sure Maryland U.S. Senate voters are reading!

  • Anne Arundel County Executive Steuart PittmanLarry Hogan should have recused himself due to his conflict of interest. Instead, he became the first governor in Maryland history to make millions of dollars while in office.

  • State Senator Shelly HettlemanThis is quite disturbing. A must-read report about Hogan conflicts of interest while in office.

  • House Majority Whip Jazz Lewis: The Trump-endorsed former Governor put his own interests before Marylanders in the past, and as a Senator, he would do it again. That is why it is so important that we elect @AlsobrooksForMD!

  • Delegate Karen R. TolesRepublican Larry Hogan is the first governor in MD history to have made millions of dollars while in office. I’m voting for @AlsobrooksForMD because she is going to be a U.S.Senator that works for We the People!@mddems

  • Delegate Julie Palakovich CarrElected officials are supposed to serve the people, not use their power to enrich themselves. In his time as Governor, Larry Hogan approved millions in housing awards to his real estate firm’s clients.

  • Delegate Courtney WatsonAre you kidding me? Breaking Times article uncovers 40% of all affordable housing awards Gov Hogan approved went to clients of his real estate firm. ?Vote for someone who actually fights for the middle class ?@AlsobrooksForMD

  • Delegate Adrian BoafoWe already knew that Larry Hogan was in the pocket of his millionaire supporters, but now it’s been confirmed. Hogan does not stand with Marylanders. He stands with his self interests.
