Vice President Kamala Harris to Speak in Indianapolis Wednesday on One of First Stops Since Launching Presidential Campaign

July 23, 2024

INDIANAPOLIS — Vice President Kamala Harris will be speaking at the annual convention for the historically Black sorority Zeta Phi Beta on Wednesday in one of her first stops across the country following President Joe Biden’s decision to end his bid for a second term in the White House.

Prior to Biden’s announcement, Harris was scheduled to speak in Indianapolis this week at the sorority’s annual convention. Her office confirmed that she will keep the speaking engagement, making Indiana one of her first stops along the campaign trail. The event is not open to the public, and is an official event through the Office of the Vice President.

On Monday evening, Indiana’s delegates to the national convention, as well as the party’s State Central Committee, endorsed Kamala Harris for President unanimously in a virtual call.

Throughout her career as a California Attorney General, U.S. Senator, and now Vice President, Harris championed support for marginalized voters and minority communities, and she has been a steadfast advocate for reproductive rights, accessible healthcare, quality education, and gun violence prevention.

“We are honored and incredibly excited to welcome Vice President Kamala Harris to Indianapolis this Wednesday,” said Indiana Democratic Party Executive Director Dayna Colbert.

“Vice President Harris has shown throughout her time in office she is a fighter for the rights of women to make decisions about their bodies in all 50 states. That’s why she came to Indiana in 2022 after Republican legislators passed the country’s first abortion ban after the fall of Roe v. Wade. She understands we must empower Americans to have more access to health services, and make healthcare costs more affordable. As our next President, she will work to codify Roe to protect and restore the ability for women to receive reproductive healthcare in Indiana. We can’t move toward a future where the government tells us what books to read and polices our exam rooms.”

“Our delegates to the Democratic National Convention stood with one voice and endorsed Vice President Harris to be our next President earlier this week. We are ready to stand united as one party in Chicago, celebrate the administration’s accomplishments for union labor, infrastructure, and seniors, and get to work to defeat MAGA Republicans at the ballot box.”
