Trump and Republicans Lied Again About Immigration Priorities

July 24, 2025

Donald Trump and Republicans claimed they only wanted to get violent criminals off the streets, something that everyone can agree with. That was just another lie.

Instead, the Trump administration and his GOP allies are targeting mothers, business leaders, day laborers, and even children with cancer, among so many others. In fact, ICE is arresting enormous numbers of immigrants who have no criminal history.

Marylanders across the state agree that violent offenders, no matter where they were born, must be held accountable. What we reject is the wholesale assault on law-abiding neighbors that rips families apart and leaves churches, schools, and workplaces reeling.

Recently, in a continued escalation, a beloved community member and faith leader who lived in the United States for nearly 25 years, Minister Daniel Fuentes Espinal, was arrested. The images of raids and heavy-handed enforcement are appearing across Maryland. Families across the state are feeling the direct consequences of an agency acting without guardrails, empowered by an administration that seems to take pleasure in cruelty.

This isn’t about politics. It’s about human decency. We call on every Republican official in Maryland to join us in condemning these heavy-handed tactics, demand real oversight of ICE, and insist that enforcement resources be aimed at dangerous criminals, not devoted fathers and community leaders. Our state must stand for safety and humanity.

Talbot Democrats will be gathering to protest this Friday at 5:30 pm. You can sign up to join at mddems.org/ShoreProtest
