Supreme Court Clears Path for Trump to Slash Education, Putting Idaho Classrooms at Risk

July 14, 2025

In response to the Supreme Court’s decision allowing Donald Trump to move forward with efforts to dismantle the Department of Education, Idaho Democratic Party Chair Lauren Necochea released the following statement:

“This ruling marks another direct attack on public schools by the Trump regime. The Department of Education was created by Congress to help students succeed and expand access to opportunity. Today’s decision strikes at the heart of that mission and puts the future of our kids at risk.

Idaho’s public schools already operate on bare-bones budgets, with rural communities facing particular challenges. As more of their precious dollars vanish, kids and educators will be left to fend for themselves. The same GOP lawmakers who orchestrated decades of underfunding of Idaho schools are standing by silently as the Trump regime does further damage.

This decision also strikes at the heart of our democracy. If a president can ignore laws passed by Congress, then there are no limits on executive power. At a time when Republicans are enabling this kind of overreach, electing Democrats is more important than ever.

Idaho Democrats will always speak up for our schools. Public education is a promise to our kids we intend to keep. We will fight to protect it and defend the democratic principles that make that promise possible.”
