South Carolina Democrats’ Statement on Donald Trump’s Joint Address

March 4, 2025

As Donald Trump prepares to deliver his joint address to Congress this evening, South Carolina Democratic Party Chair Christale Spain released the following statement: “A month into his second term, Donald Trump has been disastrous for South Carolina families. Instead of fulfilling his promise to lower costs, Trump’s policies are set to raise prices – from housing to food and gas – as he cuts critical federal programs and rolls back protections secured by Democrats. Now, he and House Republicans are pushing a budget that could rip health care away from some of the over one million South Carolinians who rely on Medicaid – all to give massive tax breaks to billionaires like Elon Musk. At this point in his term, Trump is the least popular president in modern American history and there is no question why: Trump continues to leave working South Carolinians in the dust to carry water for corrupt billionaires. Democrats are fighting tooth and nail to fight back against Trump’s billionaire agenda and make life better for working families.”

Under Trump’s leadership, prices continue to climb as consumer confidence plummets.

  • Just weeks into his presidency, Trump walked back his campaign promise to lower costs.

  • Trump’s reckless economic policies have caused U.S. consumer confidence to plummet at its sharpest pace in nearly four years to an eight-month low.

  • Business investments are now “stalling” due to Trump’s funding freezes and mass firings.

As his first and only legislative priority, Trump is trying to rig the economy for the ultra-rich and giant corporations by ripping away South Carolinians’ health care and raising costs on working families.

  • Trump and House Republicans’ budget would force working families to foot the bill for massive tax cuts to the ultra-wealthy.

  • The budget threatens Medicaid funding and would leave South Carolina with a massive budget shortfall; upend funding for hospitals, long-term care facilities, nursing homes; and threaten medical care for 1 in 5 Americans.

  • South Carolina’s trigger law would automatically end state funding for their Medicaid expansions if the federal government guts its support.

Voters are already fed up with Donald Trump and his shadow president Elon Musk. Democrats won’t let them get away with their dangerous agenda.

  • 57% say Trump has exceeded his authority since taking office.

  • 71% agree that the ultra-wealthy have too much influence on the White House and half of independents oppose Trump’s early actions across the board.

  • Elon Musk’s approval ratings are underwater and Americans are concerned Musk will delay Social Security, student aid, and other critical federal programs
