SCDP Statement on Donald Trump’s Comments About Seeking a Third Term

April 3, 2025

Columbia, SC — Donald Trump’s latest suggestion that he would seek a third term as President is yet another dangerous threat to our democracy. The Constitution is clear: no president may be elected to more than two terms.

“Trump’s comments are not just reckless - they’re a direct assault on our Democracy. Americans decided over 200 years ago that we did not want a king and that we will never bend the knee to Donald Trump or any Tyrant,” said SCDP Chair Christale Spain. “South Carolinians know the dangers of unchecked power, and we will not allow Trump or his enablers to undermine our democracy.”

As Trump continues to push an extreme and anti-democratic agenda, the South Carolina Democratic Party remains committed to protecting the rule of law, defending our institutions, and holding Republicans accountable.

We call on every Republican in South Carolina to answer directly: Do you support Donald Trump’s unconstitutional ambition to serve a third term?

Our democracy is on the line, and South Carolina voters deserve to know where their leaders stand.
