Mike Duggan Praises Right Wing Election Denier Matt Hall

April 8, 2025

LANSING — On April 7th, independent gubernatorial candidate Mike Duggan joined the extreme Republican state House Speaker, Matt Hall. Following their event, Chair of the Michigan Democratic Party Curtis Hertel released the following statement:

“MAGA Matt Hall has been failing Michiganders as Speaker of the House — supporting Trump’s tax hikes, working to kill jobs across the state, and pushing an agenda that takes money out of the pockets of Michiganders. MAGA Matt has been in lock-step with the Trump-Musk agenda that’s threatened the livelihoods of countless Michiganders, and Duggan is proving that he is as out of touch as they are.

“Michiganders want a governor who will stand up for them against the bullies and billionaires trying to gut Medicare and Social Security, not someone who will go along with whatever extremist is in power – Mike Duggan is clearly only interested in what he thinks will help him, not what’s best for Michigan.”

Here’s a reminder of MAGA Matt Hall’s past:

  • In college, Hall made violent, racist threats against another college student.
    • Saying: “THE SOUTH WILL RISE AGAIN AND WE DON’T LIKE YOUR KIND TREATING LADIES LIKE [redacted] WITHOUT DIGNITY…I’VE GOT A SHOTGUN RIFLE AND I JUST PUT A BULLET IN IT WITH YOUR NAME ON IT!”
    • “YOU HAD BETTER WATCH OUT!! WE DON’T LIKE YOUR KIND HERE IN WC!”
  • Hall was accused of assaulting his girlfriend and then interfering with a 911 call when she tried to call for help.
    • After getting in a fight in the car, Hall grabbed and damaged his then-girlfriend’s phone — ending the 911 call and blocking her from receiving their calls.
    • Members of his own caucus even called for him to step down after the truth came to light about his disturbing past.
  • Hall supports Trump’s chaotic tariffs despite their devastating impact on Michigan farmers, families, and communities.
  • Hall is an avid election denier, regularly promoting misinformation about the 2020 election and undermining Michigan’s secure and safe election process.
  • Hall has minimized the violence against police on January 6th when hundreds of rioters and insurrectionists stormed the Capitol and injured police officers in an attempt to override the results of the free and fair 2020 election.
  • Even after the overwhelming majority of Michiganders voted to constitutionally protect abortion access, Matt Hall still voted to keep the archaic 1931 abortion ban in place, threatening women’s lives and access to quality health care.
  • Hall voted against the state budget that included $416 million to fix the roads, $1.2 million for veterans, and $171.5 million to fund local public police and public safety departments.
  • Hall voted against restoring workers’ rights to safe work conditions and better pay.
  • Hall voted against Extreme Risk Protection Orders and universal background checks on gun sales that help keep our officers safe.
