IDP Chair Hart Issues Statement on Senate's Passage of Big, Bad Budget-Busting Bill

July 1, 2025

The bill will put rural hospitals and nursing homes at risk of closing, raise energy and health care costs for Iowans, and give tax breaks to the ultra-rich

DES MOINES - Iowa Democratic Party Chair Rita Hart issued the following statement regarding Joni Ernst’s vote to raise prices for working families, kick Iowans off their health insurance plans, cut Medicaid, put nursing homes and rural hospitals at risk, and raise the national debt by $3.3 trillion – all to lower taxes for billionaires and the top 1 percent:

“Why do Republicans need to be so cruel? Iowans are already dealing with the 49th worst economy in the nation and now thanks to Joni Ernst they will also have a harder time finding jobs, paying for their health care, and keeping up with rising energy costs just so billionaires and the ultra-wealthy can get some cushy tax breaks. Joni Ernst just voted to sell out hard-working Iowans to make the lives of the top 1 percent a little more luxurious.”
