With over 600 turkey farms statewide, Minnesota is the top turkey producer in the country
Governor Tim Walz today presented Minnesota’s Thanksgiving turkey at the Capitol. Photos from the event can be accessed here.
“Minnesota is proud to be the top turkey-producing state in the nation, thanks to our hardworking, dedicated turkey growers,” said Governor Walz. “Our farmers and growers feed the world while driving Minnesota’s agricultural economy. I am grateful for their work to ensure we can enjoy our favorite foods this holiday season.”
The Governor was joined by Department of Agriculture Commissioner Thom Petersen, Minnesota Turkey Growers Association President Jake Vlaminck, Minnesota Turkey Research and Promotion Council President Loren Brey, and Second Harvest Heartland CEO Allison O’Toole.
Minnesota has consistently ranked #1 in the United States for turkey production, with over 600 turkey farms and 450 growers raising 40 million birds annually. Minnesota accounts for 18 percent of all turkeys produced in the U.S. The $12 billion industry supports over 46,000 jobs across Minnesota.
At a food shelf on Monday, Governor Walz announced $5 million in new funding to fight food insecurity ahead of the holidays.
