Governor McKee Nominates Dennis Algiere to Serve on the Rhode Island Board of Education

PROVIDENCE, RI — Governor Dan McKee on May 2nd, announced his nomination of Dennis Algiere to serve on the state’s Board of Education.

“As Rhode Island works to strengthen educational outcomes, we need committed leaders with a vision for success—that’s what Dennis brings to the table,” said Governor Dan McKee. “His track record of professionalism in the private and public sectors will make him a valuable addition to the Board. I look forward to working with Dennis and the Board on how we can better serve our students, schools, and families.”

Algiere currently serves as the Executive Vice President and Chief Compliance Officer of The Washington Trust Company and has more than 25 years of banking experience. He is an active member of the RI Bankers and American Bankers Associations and previously served on the Federal Reserve Board of the Governor’s Consumer Advisory Council.

Algiere also previously represented District 38 in the Rhode Island Senate for 30 years, 25 of which as Minority Leader, before leaving in 2023. He first held office as a member of the Westerly Town Council from 1990 to 1992. Algiere was a member of President Bush's Advisory Committee on the Arts at the John F. Kennedy Center for the Performing Arts.

“I am honored that the governor has asked me to return to public service,” said Algiere. “I am especially enthusiastic about supporting our students who deserve an innovative and accessible education system that can help them on the path to success. I look forward to working with the council to help every student thrive.”

A lifelong Rhode Islander and resident of Westerly, Algiere is an active board member on several non-profits, including The United Theatre, and Salve Regina University. 

“I welcome Dennis to the Board of Education. He will bring a great perspective to the work of education in Rhode Island," said Mike Grey, Chairman of the Rhode Island Board of Education.

The Governor has submitted Algiere’s name to the Senate for advice and consent.
