Governor Invites Rhode Islanders to Experience the Holidays at the State House All Season Long

PROVIDENCE, RI - On Thursday, Governor Dan McKee and First Lady Susan McKee were joined by Department of Children, Youth and Families Director Ashley Deckert to kick off the holiday season at the State House with foster children from across Rhode Island.

“This time of year is best spent with family and friends, and Susan and I were thrilled to be able to welcome foster children from all over our state to spread some holiday cheer,” said Governor Dan McKee. “We have decked the State House halls, lit up our Christmas trees and, I encourage all Rhode Islanders to stop by and take in the holiday magic this season.”

"The holiday season is all about creating memories and celebrating traditions,” said First Lady Susan McKee. “I was thrilled to spend time with foster children from across our state, whose excitement for the holiday season reminds us all of the joy and wonder this time of year brings. I hope all families cherish time together this season and invite everyone to come experience the beauty of our decorated State House.”

“The holidays are a time when Rhode Islanders feel a renewed sense of community and connection, so I’m thrilled Governor McKee and First Lady McKee have invited our foster children and their families to the State House to help celebrate the spirit of the season”, said DCYF Director, Ashley Deckert. “This evening of togetherness and joy will carry DCYF’s children, youth, and families through 2025 and beyond.”

This year, more than two dozen children joined the Governor and First Lady in the State Room for a fun holiday celebration including a reading of “Twas The Night Before Christmas,” a snow globe craft with materials donated by a local Home Depot, a pizza party, a visit from Santa and Mrs. Claus, festive music played by the Governor’s Own 88th Army Band, and gifts donated by the Rhode Island National Guard and members of the Governor’s staff.

As part of the festivities, the children joined the Governor and Santa to light the Christmas trees throughout the State House, including an outdoor tree for the public to enjoy throughout the holiday season. This year, the outdoor tree is a 25-foot Balsam Fir donated by Big John Leyden Christmas Tree Farm in West Greenwich.
