Florida Democrats Observe Seventh Anniversary of Parkland Shooting

February 14, 2025

Friday marks seven years since 14 students and three school staff members were killed at Marjory Stoneman Douglas High School in Parkland, FL. In remembrance, the Florida Democratic Party has released the following statement:

“The years do not diminish the pain of the tragedy we experienced in Parkland,” said FDP Chair Nikki Fried. “As we remember the students and staff who had their lives ripped away from them, we renew our pledge to their families, their community, and our state — our children deserve to live free from the fear of gun violence, and it’s our responsibility to build a safer world for them.

“It’s infuriating to see Florida Republicans forget that pledge. After Parkland, our legislature took bipartisan action to curb gun violence, including passing red flag laws and raising the minimum age for the purchase of a rifle. Less than a decade later, Republicans like Randy Fine want to repeal those same laws to drum up headlines for his campaign. Ignoring the government’s solemn obligation to these children is a disgrace, and Florida Democrats will always stand in the way of efforts that threaten student safety.”
